An early intervention to address underlying risk factors for anxiety in young children with rare genetic syndromes

This project aims to develop a parent-mediated early intervention targeting key risk factors for anxiety in young children with rare genetic syndromes.

The intervention, called Little LADDERS, builds upon the existing LADDERS programme, but has been specifically adapted for young children with rare genetic syndromes. It is designed for children aged 2–6 who display multiple anxiety risk markers. The intervention will equip caregivers with supportive strategies to reduce the likelihood of anxiety becoming clinically significant later in adolescence.

A core principle of this project is collaboration with caregivers. To ensure the intervention is accessible, relevant, and effective, we are currently recruiting parents and caregivers to take part in discussion groups. This study involves a short questionnaire (approximately 15 mins) and a group discussion (60-90 minutes).

These discussions will:

  • Explore how to maximise the accessibility and effectiveness of the intervention

  • Identify potential barriers that may otherwise be overlooked

  • Assess how acceptable and practical the intervention is for families

  • Gather insights into caregivers’ previous experiences with similar interventions (where applicable)

If you are a parent/caregiver of a person under the age of 16 with a genetic syndrome associated with moderate-severe intellectual disability and are interested in taking part, please contact us at lwall21@aston.ac.uk or j.waite@aston.ac.uk or CLICK HERE
