Professionals’ Attitudes, Knowledge and Confidence in Autism Diagnosis and Behavioural Support for Children with Intellectual Disability
Calling all clinical and educational professionals and social workers!
This is a collaborative study with colleagues from the University of Warwick and the University of Surrey and explores how confident and prepared professionals feel when supporting children with an intellectual disability, particularly around behavioural support and autism assessment. It focuses on professionals’ knowledge, attitudes, confidence and approaches and how these influence the support offered to children and families.
Professionals are invited to complete an online survey tailored to their experience of working with children with an intellectual disability. The survey asks about understanding of behavioural support and/or autism assessment for children with intellectual disability, including those with genetic syndromes. Responses will help the research team understand where professionals feel confident and where further training, guidance, or support may be needed.
The study will compare knowledge and confidence across different areas of practice and explore how professionals’ attitudes and confidence relate to the behavioural support they provide. The findings will help inform future training, workforce development, and service improvement, with the aim of improving support and outcomes for children with intellectual disability and their families.
