IMProving Annual Health Checks for Teenagers with a Learning Disability (IMPACT-LD)

IMPACT-LD is a research project focused on improving the health of young people aged 14-17 with a learning disability. Although annual health checks are available through GPs and are known to help identify and address health needs, teenagers with a learning disability are the least likely to receive them. There is also limited evidence about how helpful these checks are for young people.

IMPACT-LD aims to understand why uptake is low and to work with young people, families, and professionals to improve both access to and the quality of annual health checks. The project includes interviews, focus groups, surveys, and analysis of GP records to gather views from young people with a learning disability, family carers, and healthcare professionals.

Using these findings, the team will co-design a practical, family-centred intervention and test it in practice to see whether it is workable, helpful, and acceptable to carers and professionals alike.
